SCIENTIFIC MEETING ATTENDANCE GRANT (smag)

Purpose

The Scientific Meeting Attendance Grant (SMAG) provides financial assistance to eligible ANZSPED members to attend the ANZSPED Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and contribute to the scientific program through presentation of research. The SMAG provides partial financial support toward the cost of attending the meeting.

Essential criteria

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

1. Abstract Submission

  • You must submit an abstract to the ANZSPED ASM.

2. ANZSPED Membership

  • You must have been a financial ANZSPED member for at least 3 months before the application deadline.

3. Professional Eligibility

  • Applicants must be actively working in clinical care or research relating to children and adolescents with endocrine or diabetes conditions.

Eligible applicants include:

  • RACP Advanced Trainees in Endocrinology
  • Registered Nurses
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Scientists or Researchers

4. Departmental Endorsement

Your Head of Department, supervisor, or senior clinician will be asked for endorsement, confirming your eligibility and support for attending the meeting.


How to apply

1. Applications are made through the ASM abstract submission system.

2. Applicants must:

  • Submit an abstract to the ASM.
  • Indicate during abstract submission that they wish to apply for a SMAG.
  • Declare any other sources of funding supporting attendance.

3. Late applications will not be accepted.

Grant Allocation

1. A fixed funding pool is allocated each year for SMAG awards.

2. The number and value of grants depend on:

  • the total funds available
  • the number of eligible applicants.

3. Grant amounts are determined based on:

  • the location of the ASM
  • travel distance
  • estimated costs of attendance including:
  • discounted economy airfare (if applicable)
  • early-bird registration
  • shared accommodation.

4. The SMAGs are intended to contribute to attendance costs and will not cover all expenses.


Conditions of the Grant

1. Grant recipients must:

  • register for the full ANZSPED Annual Scientific Meeting
  • attend the entire meeting
  • present their abstract if selected for presentation.

2. The SMAGs are not available to individuals attending only the Fellows’ Meeting.

3. Failure to meet these conditions may result in withdrawal or repayment of the grant.

4. The grant will be paid approximately 2 weeks prior to the date of the ASM.

5. If for any reason you do not attend the ASM or present an abstract, then the grant must be repaid.

6. Failure to provide bank details by the deadline requested will result in the grant being forfeited.

Notification

1. Applicants will be notified at the time of abstract acceptance notification regarding:

  • the outcome of their application
  • the value of the grant awarded.


ANZSPED EMERGING INVESTIGATOR AWARD

Purpose

The ANZSPED Emerging Investigator Award recognises outstanding research conducted and presented by early-career ANZSPED members at the ANZSPED Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM).

The Award aims to:

  • Promote high-quality research in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes
  • Support early-career clinician-scientists and researchers
  • Recognise substantive intellectual contribution to research

The Award is presented following the Emerging Investigators Session at the ASM.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  1. Be a current ANZSPED member at the time of abstract submission.
  2. Be within 5 years of completing specialist qualifications (e.g. FRACP, PhD, MD) or a higher degree, with significant career interruptions (parental leave, illness, carer etc) taken in account.
  3. Be the presenting author in the Emerging Investigators Session.
  4. Submit only one presentation for consideration.
  5. Not be a previous recipient of the ANZSPED Emerging Investigator Award.


ANZSPED Council reserves the right to determine eligibility.


Application Process

Applicants must submit:

  1. Abstract via the ASM abstract submission process.
  2. Emerging Investigator Application Form.
  3. Supervisor or Head of Department countersignature confirming:
  • eligibility
  • accuracy of contribution statement
  • ethical compliance.

The completed Application Form must be submitted by the deadline.

Late or incomplete applications may not be considered.


Assessment

The Award is based on:

  • Scientific quality of the research
  • Study design and methodological rigour
  • Ethical and governance compliance
  • Substantive contribution of the Emerging Investigator
  • Quality of the oral presentation

Assessment occurs in two stages:

Stage 1 – Pre-meeting review

  • Abstract
  • Application form
  • Contribution statement

Stage 2 – Meeting assessment

• Oral presentation during the Emerging Investigators Session


Key Assessment Domains

Applications will be assessed across the following domains:

  • Scientific merit and study design
  • Ethical and governance approval
  • Data acquisition and research execution
  • Statistical analysis
  • Interpretation and impact of findings
  • Contribution of the Emerging Investigator to the project
  • Quality of oral presentation

Applicants must acknowledge the source of any images, figures, or data generated by others (including AI) in both the abstract and presentation.


Judging

  • The Award is determined by a judging committee appointed by ANZSPED Council.
  • The candidate with the highest overall assessment score will receive the Award.
  • ANZSPED Council reserves the right not to award the prize if the standard of submissions is not considered sufficient.
